About Us.....
I have been involved with Belgians since 1989, when I purchased my first pet Groenendael male from the Torbrook Kennels, Casey (Torbrook's Colby CD HIC). At the time we lived just outside of Edmonton, Alberta and were expecting our first child. Casey was a wonderful loyal companion spending many naptimes under my son's crib...always keeping watch and alerting me in the night of crying. The qualities I admire of a Belgian and the reason why I chose to continue on with Belgians are;
their intelligence, protective qualities of their family and property, always attentive and ready to do what task is asked of them, , always willing to please and their happy, happy smiling attitudes. The Belgians are a breed that gets you off the couch and active in the dog world with their creative and pushy ways.
In 1990 we added a female Belgian to the household, also from the Torbrook Kennels (Ch. Torbrook's Elsa CD HIC). Elsa was a bundle of energy and kept me very busy with dog shows, obedience trials, herding clinics, search and rescue workshops, agility training and whatever else I could get her involved in. In 1992 I registered my Kennel name Windmar. Wind - as in how fast the Belgian can run, and mar - short for mark, they truly make a mark in your life.
In 1993 I had my first litter, but shortly after had to spay Elsa due to health reasons.
In 1997 a beautiful pup from the Spitfire Kennel joined the Windmar crew as my new foundation female. Ch. Spitfire Lonestar Jamboree HIC brought with her some wonderful old Belgians lines, as well as the Johnsondale lines I liked. Bree has been my solid foundation for Windmar and has passed on her smiles, wonderful easy-going attitude, health and sound structure to her offspring. Bree is the dam of my B, C, D, and E litters.
After moving down to the Calgary area in 2001, I have been involved with many new dog sports and clubs.
I have been a long time member of the BSDCC (Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Canada) as well as the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club). I am also a member of the Southern Alberta Working-Herding Dog Association and am active in conformation, trials (obedience, agility, rally-o) and have attended many community functions with my Belgians...Festivals, Parades, Carting Events. At the present we are located in DeWinton, Alberta (just south of Calgary) and have a small hobby farm with the occasional herd of cattle during the warmer months. I hope to someday add sheep year round.
